Blog #4 Calligrammes

For my project I used Adobe Illustrator. I had made a sketch of a controller and imported it into illustrator to trace. I used the text tool to add the pieces of my letter into the shapes. The text on line tool to create the outline of my sketch and the envelop tool to makes text take the shape of some pieces of the controller. When I was picking fonts I was looking for fonts with a more computer ascetic to them so they were more blocky than flowing which helped keep with the controller. The colors I used were red, blue, green, yellow, and black. I only used color on the names of my mom, dad, and brothers to highlight them since they are important to me. Overall I did not have many issues while making this since I was able to get a decently good grasp on how to use illustrator.

My Calligramme project was a Xbox controller it is simple but this holds a lot of meaning to me as a person. This simple controller reminds me of my brothers, friends, and other family. It helps me remember the smallest simplest things in my life can hold a lot more meaning than I thought. When I was writing my letter I was thinking about the past and what I would want to ask myself. So many questions so I went with some basic ones, but I made sure to talk about my hobbies of video games and drawing since they are what helped me form bonds and friendships through out my life. So I thought a controller would be a great symbol for both my hobbies and remembering my past.

 The Letter

Dear Blake Susman of January 28th, 2044,

Well shit, 2044 huh...that is a long time your 38 now. I was wondering how things are going now? Hopefully, you found what you wanted to do for a career, whether that be marine science, environmental science, or something else. I hope you were able to succeed in that and make it out there in the world. How would I know really... I’m sitting in a college dorm as a first-year student writing this.

Have you found anyone special or at least found a place you can settle down and call home? Or are you past that already and have kids because that would be awesome, I always wanted to be a father.

You still doing things that you enjoy like drawing or playing video games. I hope you have friends new and old to talk to. Hopefully, you are staying connected with Lexi and Jacob never let them go they are amazing friends.

There are so many things that we aimed for, and I hope you were able to make at least some of them happen like meeting Razor in real life. Oh, how is everyone doing? Are you keeping up with Mom and Dad if there even still around, I’m sorry if they aren’t. How about Alex and Josh? I know you would keep up with them and stay connected.

Did you manage to get your dream job at an aquarium, or did you find something else you are in love with and do that instead?

There are so many things I can ask, but there is not enough text to get it across. I am sure you know a lot of the other questions I would ask, and I know you would want to answer all of them to the absolute best of your ability. Well, did you end up staying in Tampa or did you move back home and go from there? Tampa was amazing and I know that you loved your time there. Did you stay in the University of Tampa, or did you end up transferring somewhere else?

Funny first it was that video for Leadership first semester and now this letter. Man, I have a lot of stuff to remember for down the road.

Let us see if you even remember writing this in 20 years since who knows what will happen between the day, I write this and the time when you read it 20 years later. Well, if you do see this after 20 years just remember whatever you end up doing, I am proud of you and that you will continue to do amazing things long after reading this letter all those years later. I hope you remember me in 20 years....

        Sincerely,

                Blake Susman 18-yars-old, January 1st, 2024.
