Blog #2 The Foundation

The internet was not created by just one person, but by a group of scientist and engineers there collective research came together to create it and the Internet's birthday is January 1, 1983. The foundation of the internet was created by two American computer scientist Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf, they had developed the TCP/IP which is the set of protocols that govern how data moves through the network leading it to evolve into the internet we have in the modern day. The first uses were to share information, more specifically information for the government researchers. This was in response to the previous surprise by the soviets and there launching of Sputnik 1 satellite. They wanted to be able to share information more effectively which lead to the creation of the early internet. It was called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), the network that ultimately evolved into what we now know as the Internet that we use to answer questions, communicate around the world, and continue to share information.

The world wide web was created by a British scientist named Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. He also developed Html, HTTP, and URLs. By the definition of the World Wide Web is an information system on the internet which allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to search for information by moving from one document to another. Originally the web was used to share information primarily for scientist and universities around the world. Today we use the internet to communicate on social platforms like blogs and we continue to use it to share information.

The Internet and the World Wide Web are two separate things but they operate simultaneously together. You can look at the Internet like the roads that connect towns and cities together it is the infrastructure everything operates on. The Web can be represented as the shops in the cities and towns that being what you see built upon the framework the internet setup. The data can be what travels along the roads that connect the towns and cities. This all works when the Internet and the Web work together in unison.

The first website was created on August 6, 1991 created by Tim Berners-Lee. The website detailed how to use the World Wide Web and how to create web pages and explained more about hypertext. It can still be found at its original link https://info.cern.ch/. It still provides the same information as it did when it was first launch and can be viewed in a simulator of what it would have been like accessing it when it first launched.

Hedy Lamarr was an actress and inventor born in 1914. Her mind was brilliant but it was often overlooked because of her beauty and acting career. Her invention of "Frequency Hopping" would later go on to form the basis for WiFi and Bluetooth. She was admitted into the National Inventor Hall of Fame in 2014, fourteen years after her passing in 2000. She was also dubbed the "Mother of Wi-Fi" and had a song written about her. Jeff Black and John Depp wrote a song called "This is a Song for  Miss Hedy Lamarr"

Bluetooth was invented by a man named Jaap C. Haartsen in 1994. The name Bluetooth was thought to have been an acronym but in reality it was derived from a Viking King named Harald Bluetooth based on an analogy about how Bluetooth would unite devices just like how Harald Bluetooth united the tribes of Denmark into a single kingdom. The symbol of Bluetooth is derived from the Younger Futhark bind rune for his initials, H (ᚼ) and B (ᛒ).

Vic Hayes was considered the "Father of Wi-Fi" but there is no single inventor of it. Vic Hayes had established the standards that would make it possible to attainable in 1997.  Originally, Wi-Fi was named WaveLAN, this was later changed when WECA (Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance) adopted the name Wi-Fi when a marketing agency suggested it since it had a similar charm to Hi-Fi (High Fidelity), but Wi-Fi was not an acronym for Wireless Fidelity when the name Wi-Fi was adopted by WECA now refereed to as Wi-Fi Alliance.
